What is the Learning Service methodology?

The end of this subject is approaching when we plan to do a final work where the knowledge acquired is shown, what would happen if instead of asking them for an academic work to use, we propose to our students to design a project where they put into practice what they learned ? What if that project is going to be launched? , And if in addition that project implies a benefit towards the society?
As well as our students it occurs to them that through the game it is possible to help hospitalized children to improve their situation (Project carried out in the Children’s Hospital in May 2016 by the students and professors of IES LUIS BUÑUEL and the University of Saragossa)

This proposal would be very close to the Learning and Service methodology (also called service-learning, ApS, in spanish, A-S, service-learning, S-L).
What advantages have we gained by substituting an academic work for a project that has been carried out, and which has also had a clear social benefit?
There are many advantages that this methodology can bring us, but let’s highlight what we think are fundamental:
- Education should not only be limited to the transmission of knowledge but should be a means of providing our students with the opportunity to be integrated in a comprehensive way. Learning and Service thus helps to awaken in the students their citizen awareness and interest in action at the service of society
- The ApS favors the learning of greater value, meaningful learning, since the students feel that their teachings are much more relevant and practical
- The ApS not only have a beneficial effect on our students, we must not forget that we also take positive action on the environment that surrounds us: people, environment, buildings, …
